Department Goals and Planning

World Languages: Department Goals

  • For students to develop skills in the three communication modes (interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational) that will enable them to interact successfully with the global community
  • For students to develop cultural understandings and connections on a deep level that will enable them to be global citizens, enriching their lives and the lives of others
  • For students to develop 21st skills in the use of technology along with their world language experiences to foster flexibility, creativity, collaboration, and innovation
  • For students to experience and build on the connections between world languages, world cultures and other academic areas of study
  • For students to interact and collaborate with the global community, using their world language skills to advance their understanding of world languages, world cultures and to develop a life-long love of learning languages

Research and Rationale for Language Study
:

Students are required to complete a minimum of 1 year of language study for graduation.  One high school credit is earned upon the completion of the 6th - 8th grade sequence at the middle school level and passing the FLACS Checkpoint A Regional Exam in June.  

For a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation using a world language sequence, students are required to complete an additional two years of study in the same language at the high school level, completing a three year sequence and passing the FLACS Checkpoint B Regional Exam in June.
